Key takeaways

  • Most prompt lists give you an idea and leave you stuck. These give you three things: a first line to start, a twist to avoid the obvious, and a conflict to drive the story.

  • There are 100 prompts across 10 genres: fantasy, science fiction, mystery, romance, horror, historical, contemporary, adventure, humor, and dystopian.

  • You can use all three parts or just one. If a prompt does not spark anything, move on.

  • The 30-minute workflow at the end turns any prompt into a finished short draft.

A prompt is only as useful as the story it starts.

A bare idea like "write about a lighthouse" leaves the hard part to you: where to begin, what goes wrong, and why anyone should care. These prompts do three things for you. Each one gives you a first line to begin, a twist that keeps the story from going where everyone else's will, and a conflict to explore so the story has something to push against.

There are 100 prompts, ten in each of ten genres. Use them as written, mix the parts, or steal one element and ignore the rest. Further down you will find a short workflow that turns a prompt into a first draft in about half an hour.

How to Use These Prompts

  • Start with the first line. Write it down, then keep going without stopping to plan.
  • Use the twist when you are stuck, or save it for the middle of the story.
  • Treat the conflict as the engine. Someone wants something, and something stands in the way.
  • Swap in your own details. Change the names, the setting, and the period.
  • Do not worry about the ending until you have a draft.

Turn a Prompt Into a Story in 30 Minutes

  1. Minutes 0 to 3: choose. Pick one prompt and read the first line, the twist, and the conflict.
  2. Minutes 3 to 8: plan in five lines. Who is the main character? What do they want? What stops them? What does the twist change? How could it end?
  3. Minutes 8 to 23: write without stopping. Begin with the first line. Do not edit. If you get stuck, use the twist.
  4. Minutes 23 to 28: write the ending. It does not have to be perfect, just decided.
  5. Minutes 28 to 30: read it aloud once and mark anything you want to fix later.

To go further, use Writingful's story tools: the story prompt generator for new starters, the plot generator for an outline, the plot twist generator when you are stuck, and the fantasy story generator for a longer draft. Treat anything the tools produce as raw material. The story is better when the voice, the details, and the choices are yours. See our story writing page for more.

Tips for Better Story Prompts

  • Make your character want something specific. "Wants to leave town" is stronger than "is unhappy."
  • Put the conflict early. The reader should feel a problem by the end of the first page.
  • Use a concrete first line. Names, places, and objects beat abstractions.
  • Let the twist change the meaning, not just the plot.
  • Write badly on purpose in the first draft. You can fix it later.

If you write younger or want simpler ideas, see our writing prompts for kids, and if you want something more personal, try our journal prompts.

What These Prompts Cannot Do

A prompt starts a story, but it cannot write one for you. These are ideas, not templates that guarantee a good result, and similar ideas may already exist. If you plan to publish, make the story your own by changing the details, the voice, and the structure. If you use AI tools along the way, you are responsible for what you submit, including following any rules your school, publisher, or contest has about AI help.

Frequently asked questions

Ideas, questions, or opening lines that give you a starting point for a story, poem, or scene. They help when you do not know what to write about.
Pick one, write the first line, and keep going without stopping to edit. Use the twist if you get stuck, and treat the conflict as the thing that drives the story.
As long as the idea needs. A 30 minute exercise often produces a few hundred to a thousand words. You can revise it into something longer later.
Generally yes, if the story is your own work. Prompts are starting points. Check the rules of any contest or publisher you submit to.
A specific character, a clear conflict, and something unexpected. A twist keeps the story from following the most obvious path.
It can suggest plot ideas, twists, and outlines. Rewrite what it gives you in your own voice and follow any rules about AI use in your context.
